Take the “$10 Local Food Challenge” & Help Grow Our Economy!

 The “$10 Local Food Challenge” is a new program launched by the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation, with partners Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and the Essex County Federation of Agriculture, urging all residents of our area to spend $10 on locally grown or produced food.

If every household in Windsor-Essex spent an extra $10 /week on local food  it would be an investment of an extra $1.5 million in our economy weekly, and $78 million for an entire year! When money is spent in our communities, it is spent again locally another five to seven times, helping to retain jobs and grow new and existing businesses.

As part of the challenge, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island has launched the “Windsor Essex $10 Local Food Challenge Facebook Photo Contest” (runs until September 15, 2013) , a marketing effort designed to drive more local awareness and attention to buying local and attending events that exhibit and promote our local food and products. With all kinds of locally grown produce, meat markets and wineries in Windsor Essex – the choices are endless and spending $10 a week will be easy. Are you up to the challenge?

The Heinz Ketchup to Art Show’s focus is to celebrate the proud heritage and culture of the great town of Leamington as the tomato capital of Canada. This exhibition combines two vital parts of our region, agriculture and the arts. Grown with creativity and uniqueness, in this exhibition and community event, ketchup becomes a work of art!

 

This exhibition is open to all amateur and professional visual artists. All mediums accepted in 2D and 3D (painting, photography, sculpture, textile, installations, etc.) A maximum of 4 entries per artists. All artwork MUST be in the theme of Heinz, Tomatoes or Ketchup.

The Leamington Arts Centre (LAC) is located in the heart of South Western Ontario’s beautiful uptown Leamington in one of the town’s many wonderful heritage buildings. The LAC is a state of the gallery which offers two large art galleries, a Heinz museum, Erie Quest Heritage Ship Wreck museum as well as a gift shop, art classes, workshops and meeting spaces. Kingsville BIA Concerts July & August 2013

‘NOT QUITE CARNEGIE’ SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

Presented by Kingsville BIA

Free outdoor summer concert series for all ages is being held on the lawn beside the Carnegie Arts & Visitor Centre, 28 Division St., S., Kingsville,  on each Wednesday evening throughout July and August at 7:00 p.m.  In case of rain the Epworth United Church Hall will host the event.

Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening with friends and neighbours.

The concerts are free but the “hat” is passed for donations, which helps to pay for the performers.  Tax receipts are available for donations exceeding $20.

Community Rallies to Save Young Mother’s Life

Katelyn Bedard Bone Marrow Association helps recruit stem cell and
blood donors for patients in need

 

 
Mother and elementary school teacher, Lori, is fighting Myelodyplastic Syndrome (MDS)and needs a stem cell donor to return to a healthy, happy life. Katelyn Bedard Bone Marrow Association (KBBMA)was inspired to help Lori and nearly 1,000 other Canadians in need of stem cell transplants. Together with OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network and Canadian Blood Services, they are hosting an event to register new donors.

June 10-16 marks National Blood Donor Week, and KBBMA alongside OneMatch and Canadian Blood Services are hoping the community will join them in celebrating by raising awareness of the importance of becoming a blood and stem cell donor and the meaning of the Blood Signal. The Blood Signal is a visual icon intended to connect people to the idea of giving blood, rallying communities to come together and save lives.

Lori’s MDS diagnosis means that she will need to rely on blood donations while a search for her matching stem cell donor in underway.

Stem cells from young and male donors are optimal for patients like Lori because they can have better post-transplant results and fewer chances of complications. Patients are most likely to find their matching donor with someone of similar ethnic background. This is why more ethnically diverse donors are needed to register with OneMatch to help all patients in need.

Of more than 340,000 Canadians currently registered on the network, 75 per cent are Caucasian and only 25 per cent are from Canada’s many diverse ethnic groups. There is an immediate need for more donors, especially young men ages 17-35 from various ethnic backgrounds.

OneMatch and Canadian Blood Services are encouraging young, healthy, ethnically diverse donors to register to help all patients in need. Blood donors are needed to help patients. Their donations can be life-saving.
