Sheldon Kennedy Seminar April 4, 2013

FORMER NHL PLAYER SHELDON KENNEDY PRESENTS ‘RESPECT IN SPORT’ MESSAGE AT THE WFCU CENTRE

 The WFCU Centre will host former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy as he presents his “Respect in Sport” program on April 4, 2013 at 7 pm. Kennedy, known for his outspoken advocacy on child protection and the prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment will join his colleagues from Respect Group to discuss emerging best practices from across Canada. The session is open to all adults interested in hearing Sheldon’s empowering message.

The event will be presented by the Windsor Minor Hockey Association and other local sport groups and teams, who hope to engage other  sports organizations, teachers and community leaders in order to educate community members on how to recognize, understand and deal with all types of abuse, harassment, maltreatment, neglect and bullying. Tickets are by donation at the door and Windsor Minor Hockey asks guests to bring a canned good or monetary donation to the Unemployed Help Centre to gain admission. 

“This is a great opportunity for leaders in our community to learn valuable lessons from Sheldon and be better prepared to identify and deal with these problems to create a safer environment for Windsor’s youth” commented Dean Lapierre, President of the Windsor Minor Hockey Association.

Respect in Sport was founded in 2004 by Wayne McNeil and Sheldon Kennedy in conjunction with the Canadian Red Cross. The program is the only one of its kind in Canada and has worked with sports organization, schools, and businesses across the country in order to educate leaders on the importance of dealing with bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect within their organizations and the community.

March Is Red Cross Month

Red Cross celebrates “March is Red Cross Month”

 Each year, the Red Cross celebrates “March is Red Cross Month” by raising awareness about the contributions the organization makes to the community. Here in Windsor/Essex alone, the Red Cross assisted more than 650 people last year, thanks to the support and dedication of more than 120 volunteers.

To recognize March is Red Cross month, the community is invited to attend an
Open House
on Thursday, March 7 from 10am to 3pm
at The Canadian Red Cross
located at 3909 Grand Marais Road East, Windsor

Attendees will enjoy tours of the facility, first aid games, live FASTeam scenarios, snacks and refreshments, plus, enter for a chance to win a First Aid Kit, Babysitting course or Emergency First Aid Course! Also, sign-up for a March First Aid course and receive the second one for 25% off. “We hope that community members will join us to celebrate the work of the Red Cross,” said Lily-May LeBlanc, Community Services Coordinator, First Aid/ Injury Prevention.

For more than 100 years, the Canadian Red Cross has provided help and hope to those facing conflict, disaster, injury or illness here at home and around the world. Every four minutes, the Canadian Red Cross responds to a disaster in Canada providing support and comfort to those affected. The Red Cross also offers a variety of services that help elderly and vulnerable members of the community remain living in their own homes, including Meals on Wheels, Transportation and the Health Equipment Loan Program. First aid, water safety, violence and abuse prevention programs and workshops on humanitarian issues are also offered by the Red Cross.

Canadian Cancer Society Youth Troop Art Exhibit Feb. 24 to March 2, 2013

Young At Heart will be open Feb 24^th-March 2^nd, 2013 at the ArtSpeak Gallery; 1942 Wyandotte Street, East, Windsor,. The collection will feature a number of diverse works with all forms of media and styles welcome from its members.

The Canadian Cancer Society Youth Troop boasts many visual as well as performance based artists. The traditional visual art and photographs will be on display as well as musical groups playing throughout the reception held on Friday, March 1^st, 2013, which is open to the public. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go directly to the local Canadian Cancer Society, Windsor-Essex County Unit.

“The caliber of youth who become involved with our Youth Troop is exemplary. These teens are devoted to fighting cancer, through advocacy, volunteering, carrying out prevention and awareness campaigns and now through fundraising and art. We are excited to be able to engage them and the wider community to appreciate our young local artists and fight this horrible disease,” states Volunteer Engagement Coordinator and Youth Troop innovator, Christine Richer of the Canadian Cancer Society-Essex County Unit.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Youth Troop consists of youth leaders from various high schools throughout Windsor/Essex County.  The goal of the Youth Troop is to increase awareness about cancer prevention and health promotion in our local high schools, while at the same time, providing youth with the meaningful, flexible and fun volunteer experiences they are looking for.

New members are always welcome at the CCS’s Youth Troop. One of the great benefits of membership is the uniting of community to fight this devastating disease and making a real difference in the lives of people right here in Essex County, creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer.
