Art at Estetica For Charity Until Jan. 10, 2015

“One Wish for a cure”

Estetica Day Spa 40 Amy Croft Dr. Tecumseh,  Now to January 10, 2015

Rudolph? Yes, Rudolph. Paul Murray a local born international art talent has much in common with the red nosed reindeer. He has donated proceeds to cancer and discounted work for his patrons. That’s not all; he is giving away $10,000 of artwork and Santa’s for only $25, plus a gift from Estetica.

What? Art at a spa? Well this is no regular spa, and no run of the mill art. It’s one of the area’s best day spas, and the peaceful art of one of the area’s best artists. What a perfect partnership!

Paul Murray – a “Rudolph”, yes indeed.  He only shows up in Windsor at Christmas, and all of his childhood, he didn’t fit in.  Teachers couldn’t find out why he didn’t learn like the rest. Things he knew he could excel in, were kept from him at times, regular folks thought him too dumb. Paul Murray was an undiagnosed dyslexic.  Murray fought back, he drew every second he could, he studied art and the old ways things used to be when they are done by hand. He skated backwards better than anyone else in hockey, and he started his own band.  Soon, at age 11, he found a way to be in the local “Art in the Park”.  A tough thing for a shy kid that had a hard time with numbers. At age 13, he dedicated himself to his art full time, age 16, he published his first limited editions, age 31 he published his first art book “Mirrored Souls” (it sold more than 5,000 copies).

Now Paul Murray’s art has been sold in over 150 international galleries, shown in museums and won countless awards. Murray considers his biggest awards, the hundreds of thousands of dollars he has been able help raise for charities.

Murray preserves an old time culture and an intense emotional connection which he projects in every painting.

"It's a Win, Win, Win!" ,” says Kati-Jane Murray. "Customers’ wins by saving, the Cancer Society wins with money raised, and both hosts get to help their community. The event comes together perfectly; Paul Murray preserves our past, Estetica preserves the person of today, and together they are preserving the future of those in need in our community."

Estetica is open daily with extended hours until Dec 31, Closed Dec 25, & 26, Jan 1, Jan 4, 5, 6.  Visit paulmurray.com or estetica.com to learn more.

Cowboys in Cardigans Release Second Album Dec. 19, 2014 With Charity Concert

Local rock band Cowboys in Cardigans are poised to release their 2nd album of 2014 on December 19, 2014 at Venue Music Hall in Windsor (255 Ouellette Ave), in a co-headlining show with local rock veterans ClassX. The band has also partnered with local musician Kenneth MacLeod, who runs a music program for youth through the Sandwich Teen Action Group. Proceeds from the show will go directly to this program, as the band plans to purchase instruments for Kenneth's music program.

The new EP, Platypus, follows Cowboys in Cardigans' debut full length album Cockatoo, released earlier in 2014. The album was made possible due to grant funding that the band received from the city in July. Cowboys in Cardigans were one of the recipients of the City of Windsor's Arts, Culture, and Heritage Fund (ACHF) grant, and immediately went to work writing and producing the album.

“The goal of ACHF is to foster the growth of the local arts, culture, and heritage scene in Windsor,” said Devon Pastorius, Guitarist for Cowboys in Cardigans. “We figured the best way that we could do that is by helping to give some kids the opportunity to be the next generation of musicians in this city.”

Platypus is a brand new collection of seven tracks from Cowboys in Cardigans. It will be the second album the band has released in 2014. The band returned to the studio that Cockatoo was produced at, and recorded and produced Platypus in Windsor, at SLR Studios with local sound engineer Marty Bak.

“The album is called Platypus for a number of reasons, but the main one is that it's an eclectic mix of bits and pieces, that aren't quite related but somehow come together, sort of like a Platypus,” explains Jamie Reaume, singer/songwriter for Cowboys in Cardigans. “We have some of the heaviest music we've ever written, right next to fully acoustic tracks with Jordo (the drummer) on the ukelele. It's very diverse for a seven song album, and we're very excited to get it out to people.”

Platypus will be released on Friday, December 19th at Venue Music Hall. The proceeds from the show and CD/Merchandise sales will go towards purchasing new instruments for local youth through Kenneth MacLeod's music program through the Sandwich Teen Action Group. Tickets (starting at $10) can be bought in advance, or at the door. The CD and special limited run T-Shirts will also be for sale.

Check Cowboys in Cardigans Facebook page for the latest info.

Candlelight Service To Remember Children Who Have Passed Away Takes Place December 14, 2014

Local family members bereaved by the death of a child will come together for the 6th annual Candlelight Service on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in remembrance of children who have died.

The Candlelight Service is part of the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting which unites family and friends around the globe in lighting candles to honour and remember children who have died at any age from any cause.  It is also an extension of the agency’s support group for bereaved parents who have lost a child.

“For many families this is an opportunity to come together to openly mourn their child who died,” says bereavement specialist with CMHA-WECB, Colleen Campo.  “For those whose pain is new it is a safe place to come together with others who feel the same loss.”

“It also allows those whose loved one died years ago an opportunity to remember their child in a public way.  Families are able to tell the world not to forget their child… to honour their child so that their light may always shine”.

This free event includes a service that includes the reading of the name of each deceased child, lighting of candles in honour of those who have died and a memory table that will be filled with photographs left by family and friends.

The vigil will take place on Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the WFCU Centre on Mickey Renaud Way, Windsor. This year the event is being supported by Heavenly Rest Family of Catholic Cemeteries,  Remember Our Children, Tim Hortons Rose Wood and family, the Douglas family, the Osborne family, the Marentette family and the Gaudet family.

The CMHA-WECB has a vision of “mentally healthy people in a healthy society”. The bereaved parents group is part of the agency’s adult bereavement program. This program receives minimal funding and relies on community donations to operate.

Donate a Sleeping Bag until November 24, 2014

Sharing the Warmth Sleeping Bag Drive

Chief Bruce Montone and Windsor Fire & Rescue Services are partnering with the Sharing the Warmth sleeping bag donation campaign in memory of Matt Rawlings.

After Matt’s death in 2012, his parents discovered his “bucket list,” which included the item, “Help a homeless person.”  Inspired by Matt’s wish, the local family’s goal is to provide a little warmth this winter to Windsor’s most vulnerable, our homeless.

Sharing the Warmth is a sleeping bag drive with a goal to collect as many new or gently used sleeping bags as possible to be donated to Street Help, a local organization dedicated to providing services to our local homeless.  The family is seeking community involvement and asking individuals, companies, organizations, schools and sports teams to join them by collecting and donating new or gently used sleeping bags.

Matt’s family is also encouraging participants to take a photo of their groups posing with the bags and post it on their Sharing the Warmth Facebook page.

Interested participants are asked to drop sleeping bags off at any Windsor Fire & Rescue Services station until November 24.  The sleeping bags are to be donated to Street Help on November 25, which would have been Matt Rawlings’ 21st birthday.

Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, 2014

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services Reminds Windsor Residents:
Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire. That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!”

Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, Windsor Fire & Rescue Services is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them monthly.

According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

“In a fire, seconds count,” said Fire Chief Bruce Montone. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign includes the following smoke alarm messages:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do.
  • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly.
  • Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services will be hosting activities during Fire Prevention Week to promote “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!” Through these educational, family-oriented activities, residents can learn more about the importance of working smoke alarms and testing them monthly.  Activities will include:

  • Fire truck appearances and educational material to be distributed at a selection of local grocery stores on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Fire truck appearances and public safety talks at recreation facilities throughout the week.
  • Truck tours and gear demonstration at Tecumseh Mall on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Educational booths, truck rides and activities for kids and the whole family at Devonshire Mall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs and activities in Windsor, please contact the Windsor Fire & Rescue Services at 519-253-6573. To learn more about smoke alarms and “Working Smoke Alarms Saves Lives,” visit NFPA’s Web site at www.firepreventionweek.org.  Follow Windsor Fire and Rescue Services on Twitter @WindsorFire1 or visit www.windsorfire.com to learn more about Fire Prevention Week 2014 activities. Preregister Sept 25, 6 pm at Brews & Cues For Oct. 5 Windsor Jeep Jamboree Poker Run

A large group of Jeep enthusiasts are following in their 2-wheeled friends footsteps and organizing Windsor's first Jeep Jamboree Poker Run.  Motorcycle enthusiasts have camaraderie been raising charitable funds with poker runs for years.  Sisters, Debbie and Laura Kay, started The Windsor Jeep Club a little over a year ago in hopes to bring area Jeep enthusiasts together this way too.  They wanted their Jeep club to have some fun, share ideas and to work together to raise much needed funds for brain injury programs in Windsor and Essex County.

The Windsor Jeep Club now has over 300 members.

“This club is more of a social and fundraising club” says Debbie Kay.  “Some of the other Jeep clubs in the area are more for the off roaders.”  “We all have a commonality in our love of all things Jeep though.”  All Jeep clubs have been very supportive of the upcoming poker run. “I have heard from Jeep clubs as far as Niagara Falls and even from Ohio & Michigan” added Laura Kay.  Talon Walsh, President of the Essex County Jeep Club and one of the organizers, has been a great help to us from the very beginning.  “Talon's group also supports us by answering most of our member's technical and off roading questions.”   “Whether your Jeep will never see mud or your Jeep will never be clean this event is for you.  Working with many different Jeep clubs will ensure that our very first Poker run will be a day to celebrate the freedom and adventure that our Jeeps represent.”

Jeff Arcand bought a 1986 CJ-7 in 1991 and has had a passion about Jeeps and their history ever since.  “The first civilian Jeep was produced in 1945.  Prior to that time they were strictly military vehicles.  The civilian Jeep has continued to be popular ever since and has a very strong presence in Windsor,  Canada's automotive capitol.”

Another local enthusiast, Adam Sokoloski, drives his father's, Ohio built, 1944 Willys Jeep proudly.  Adam and his father found and restored this Jeep together about 15 yrs ago.  They painted the Jeep a traditional military green and added his father's military # down the side of the hood.  The Willy was parked for the past few years but when his Dad passed away earlier this year Adam knew he had to get it back on the road.  This Willy honours both his dad and his dad's military service for Canada.

Poker Run participants will gather at the Riverside Sportsmen Club, located at 10835 Riverside Drive, before setting off on a scenic 160 km ride throughout Essex County.  Stops will be made at Brews & Cues in LaSalle, the Verdi Club in Amherstburg, and Rochester Place in Lakeshore.

The run will end back at the Riverside Sportsmen's Club, where participants will be able to enjoy a BBQ and special live performances by Windsor's own Jeff Lorenzon, The Sellouts, Drop Dead Famous, and The Formula.

The Windsor Jeep Jamboree Poker Run will take place On Sunday, October 5th, 2014,

The funds raised will stay locally in our community and will be directed to Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario's (A.L.S.O) Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) programs and services.

Registration is currently open, and interested Jeep owners can find more details online at www.facebook.com/windsorjeepjamboree.   Entry into the Poker Run is $20 per driver and $5 per passenger; however registration fees will be waived with $100+ in pledges. To join the run and obtain pledge sheets for this event, call Laura Kay at (519) 259-2258 or email laurakay@alsogroup.org or visit our promotional partner Wheel Covers Unlimited. at 2594 Howard Ave. Windsor.

The event is sponsored by: CKLW Am800, Biz X Magazine, Festival Tent and Party Rentals, & Action Signs.

5th Annual Explore the Shore Weekend, July 26 & 27, 2014

The 5th annual Explore the Shore weekend  along the scenic and historic County Road 50, on the north shore of Lake Erie, in the Town of Essex, just south of Harrow.  Thirty-six businesses, recreational facilities and community groups are participating on the weekend of July 26 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Organizers are excited to have 4 new participants this year: Drexler Diving Systems sharing the history of shipwrecks that lie just off our shore, The Garden Gallery with artists and musicians demonstrating their skill and talents on site, J.L. Frost Photography giving tours of the darkroom and Paglione Estate Winery with a Bocci Ball Tournament.

All of the participants have planned a full slate of activities and local products, including “great rate” golf, sailing, live entertainment, wine tastings, fresh produce, homemade pies, candles, church dinners, local root beer, fresh blueberries, vineyard and orchard tours, art, gift shops and florals. New activities this year are geo-caching along the route, a bicycle show and a Passenger Pigeon exhibit.  There will be food specials all along the route, including ice cream cones, wood-fired pizza, BBQs and picnic lunches.

The County Wide Active Transportation System (CWATS) will have a booth at Colchester Harbour Park and is sponsoring a draw for a new bike.

The 2014 theme is County Road 50, Always Changing, an invitation to learn the history of our community and people.  To aid the visitor, we will have a Scavenger Hunt based on this theme with information at each participating location.  Collect the answers and you will be eligible to enter a prize draw.

Enjoy the beaches, conservation areas, and especially the free Clubhouse Kidz Zone at the Colchester Beach and Harbour (with games, crafts, splash pad, treasure hunt, and more).

Bring a canned good for the Harrow Food Bank, and support our other charity events chosen by each participant.

Serbian Flood Relief Event June 20, 2014

Balkan Sear-Kuss Village Concert Serbian Flood Relief Event June 20,2014 at 7pm

Plan to attend the first ever "Balkan Sear-Kuss Village Concert" featuring the Lemon Bucket Orkestra and Lika Orkestra. Simply put, these groups are a mix of Balkan-Klezmer-Gypsy-Party-Punk-Super Mix of Balkan music smacked with the fun and frolic of Balkan Culture!

From Toronto to New York, Budapest to Berlin, audiences around the world are hailing the Lemon Bucket Orkestra as folk music revolutionaries. This 15 piece guerrilla force has an army of followers and fans both at home and abroad.

Those discovering the band for the first time quickly realize that their shows are more than concerts; they’re wild, joyful experiences rarely contained for walls; they’re celebrations of tradition and culture expressed with an explosive punk spirit; they’re ecstatic street parades that erupt from the collision of nostalgia and imagination.

The Lemon Bucket Orkestra made headlines (such as CNN, CBC, Fox News and CTV), on their way to Romania for a three-week tour, when they played an impromptu concert on a delayed Air Canada flight. In September 2013, the band was nominated in four categories at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. In February 2014, Lemon Bucket Release of Lume, Lume was nominated for a Juno Award in the category of "Best World Music Album" In March 2014, the band was nominated for an Indie Award by Indie88 for "World Artist/Group or Duo of the Year".

This will be the first appearance for the Lemon Buckets in the Windsor Essex Area. A FREE Dance Workshop will be provided by the Lemon Buckets at the Serbian Village Gracanica Carrousel of Nations in Kosovo Hall at the Serbian Centre 6770 Tecumseh Rd E, Windsor, Friday June 20th 9:15pm

Portions of proceeds will be directed to the Aid For Families affected by the Flood in Serbia and Republic of Serbia. All donations will go directly to the bank accounts set up by the governments of Serbia and Republika Srpska. Also appearing - Lika Orkestra, an acoustic Serbian TamburaĊĦi band from Toronto, formed in 1967 in Toronto with founding members Milan Sanader, and John and Michael Lukich. The name originated from the fact that their fathers were Serbs from LIKA. They are well seasoned Balkan vets specializing in weddings, parties, and ‘bar band’ situations.

Traditional Food and Drinks will be available for purchase at the event. Limited tickets available. Buy Now at www.aidforserbiawindsor.com $17 Advance $20 At the Door
